Wildfire risk reduction
Wildfires, intensified by climate change, present a growing risk to Italy's landscape and pose a serious threat to both life and the environment.
The project's focus is to improve risk prevention and management across seven regions by implementing alternative methods for detecting affected areas, adopting standardized procedures, enhancing warning systems, and increasing on-ground intervention capabilities.
In this context, the CapRischio project specifically aims to:
• Improve understanding of areas most vulnerable to wildfires
• Integrate wildfire risk with other risks, such as hydraulic and hydrogeological risks, to enable more comprehensive and targeted planning
• Strengthen non-structural prevention activities, particularly by enhancing Territorial Wildfire Prevention Units.
The following details the specific activities of the project aimed at addressing wildfire risk.
This activity aims to develop guidelines that help Regions refine risk classifications based on the characteristics of their territories. Special emphasis will be placed on the types of exposed elements, such as highly valuable natural forests and protective reforestation, as well as accompanying vulnerabilities like hydraulic and hydrogeological hazards. By calculating a forest fire risk index that integrates these variables, we can implement more targeted and effective prevention activities.
The goal of this initiative is to enhance the operational response by improving Territorial Wildfire Prevention Units, which will make the detection and reporting of incidents more timely and effective.
